The dark side of online travel booking: Fed up small businesses call for ACCC action

The ACCCAustralian Competition and Consumer Commission The ACCC is Australia's competition regulator and national consumer law champion. has confirmed it is investigating whether to take action to address issues within the online travel booking industry, amid persistent concerns that independent hotel and motel operators are being ripped off by online travel agents (OTAs).

Online travel booking agents (OTAs), such as and Expedia, have exploded in popularity in recent years, b ut members of the industry say the proliferation of the services is having an unprecedented impact on small businesses in the sector.

‘Cut red tape by reducing inputs, information overload’

Several of the federal government’s own agencies have admitted that more could be done to cut red tape, expressing a desire for business information to be centralised.

Business leaders don’t really care who the regulator is – it’s all just government. That was the position put forward by a delegate at the National Small Business Summit, who asked a panel of regulators what they were doing to reduce the red tape burden on SMEs.
