Tax chief: we’re not mongrels

Australia’s tax commissioner Chris Jordan has attacked the ABC over a Four Corners episode, rejecting suggestions his employees were a “mongrel bunch of bastards”.

Mr Jordan told a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra that the Australian Taxation Office believed the Four Corners story last month was “contrary to the ABC code of practice and editorial policies” and fundamentally inaccurate.

‘We are not mongrels or bastards’: Jordan defends ATO staff as he announces tax review trial

Tax Commissioner Chris Jordan says the Australian Taxation Office has agreed to trial independent reviews when small businesses are in dispute with the agency over a tax matter, following a joint Fairfax-Four Corners investigation into the agency.

Appearing before Senate estimates on Wednesday, Mr Jordan took issue with the joint investigation’s revelations of small business taxpayers being harassed, intimidated and bullied by the agency, and then having insufficient avenues to appeal the decisions and get adequate compensation.
