- Government-sponsored Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey finds 61.6% support for same-sex marriage
- National voluntary survey had 79.5% response rate (13.7 million out of 16 million enrolled voters)
- Same-sex marriage bill likely to pass Parliament before Christmas
The bill most likely to legislate changes to the Marriage Act to allow same-sex marriage is a private members bill from Senator Dean Smith (Liberal, WA). Smith’s bill has bipartisan support and the Prime Minister has said it’s a “good place to start.” Smith has given notice to the Senate that he plans to introduce his bill on Thursday, 16 November. Even if Smith’s bill passes the Senate, it can’t be debated in the House of Representatives until it sits again on Monday, 27 November.
